Talking Kentucky Derby and Simplification’s Chances with Alessandro Sano

04.27.2022

Alessandro Sano has racing in his genes and now he’s getting his second up-close experience with a horse in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. His father, Antonio, trains Simplification — one of the horses who’s entered to run in America’s biggest horse race on May 7 at Churchill Downs. Alessandro, who works with his dad, sat down with Ren Carothers to talk about his excitement as the Kentucky Derby nears.

In 2017, the Venezuelan-born Alessandro and his father got their first crack at Derby glory when Gunnevera made his bid in the run for the roses. Gunnevera ended up finishing seventh in the 2017 Kentucky Derby but ultimately ended up earning more than $5.5 million in his career. For Alessandro, the journey that’s just beginning with Simplification has the potential to be just as memorable as that of Gunnevera.

The Sano barn is based in Florida where Gulfstream Park is located. It was at Gulfstream that Simplification scored big — and earned his Derby berth — when he won the Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes. Ren discussed the horse’s pedigree with Sano and why it could give Simplification an edge on Derby day.
