all in Legends

Years ago, before the sport of Thoroughbred horse racing had reached a truly global scale and before shipping horses around the world was a matter of simple routine, a young man — a budding horseman — would ride in bareback races across Jumeirah Beach in Dubai. He was far removed from the world-famous Thoroughbred racetracks in countries like England, France, and the United States, but that would not be the case for long.

After 33 years and hundreds of horses, Tiznow still holds a notable distinction among Breeders’ Cup Classic runners. He’s the only horse who’s won it twice.

Tiznow capped a Horse of the Year campaign with a win in the race in 2000, and a year later redeemed his tough-luck season with another hard-fought victory in the Classic. A gritty, refuse-to-lose style was his hallmark and nowhere was it better displayed than in his Breeders’ Cup victories.

Rachel Alexandra was led out of her barn, her coat glistening and dappled and a bit lighter than when she was racing. As she stood placidly in the morning sun, she was not bothered in the slightest by the two visitors fawning over her. She has held her weight extremely well, and she still has that same bright eye her fans remember during her glory days.

Del Mar racetrack in California has long been known as a summer proving ground for talented 2-year-old Thoroughbreds, and near the end of every summer meet the track hosts two prestigious races for the best horses in the division — the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity, open to both colts and fillies, and the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante

Meadow Star surely enjoyed a stellar racing career.

She won her first nine starts. Eight of them were stakes and four were Grade 1s.

She was a decisive winner by five lengths in the 1990 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and the undefeated filly was a unanimous choice as the year’s champion 2-year-old filly.

At 3, she was tested against colts in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial Stakes, in which she finished fourth and suffered her first defeat. Returned to distaff competition after that setback, she romped by six lengths in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes.
