Pegasus World Cup Weekend Sparks Major Changes to Equibase Leaderboard
Racing
Pegasus World Cup weekend at Gulfstream Park resulted in significant movement on the Equibase Leaderboard, particularly within the older divisions. Seven graded stakes races were contested, showcasing strong performances across multiple surfaces and featuring the first North American Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series race of the year.
The outstanding card Jan. 24 at Gulfstream was anchored by the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes, which offered an automatic berth to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic Oct. 31 at Keeneland.
Skippylongstocking had competed three previous times in the World Cup and made his fourth try in the race a winning one for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., who also trains runner-up White Abarrio, the 2025 Pegasus World Cup winner. The victory was Skippylongstocking’s 11th graded stakes win in 28 career graded stakes appearances and pushed his career earnings to $5,461,250. Winning jockey Tyler Gaffalione has won five graded stakes races aboard the 7-year-old by Exaggerator. With $1,686,000 in 2026 North American purse earnings, Skippylongstocking is the new leader in the overall standings.
One race prior in the $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational Stakes, Test Score, a 4-year-old Lookin At Lucky colt and homebred for Amerman Racing, battled on even terms at the top of the stretch before digging in gamely to prevail by a neck under Manny Franco. Graham Motion trained the top two finishers as Test Score’s stablemate One Stripe rallied powerfully for second. Test Score earned a career-best 113 Equibase Speed Figure for his second career Grade 1 victory. With $516,000 in 2026 earnings, he now ranks third on both the overall and older male leaderboards.
The highest winning Equibase Speed Figure last week was recorded in the Grade 2 Pegasus World Cup Filly & Mare Turf Invitational Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, in which Destino d’Oro earned a career-best 114 for her determined half-length victory. Ridden by Junior Alvarado for trainer Brad Cox, Destino d’Oro earned the third stakes victory of her career and kept her perfect record at Gulfstream intact. With $285,000 in earnings so far in her 4-year-old campaign, Destino d’Oro moved into the top spot in the older female division and fourth overall.
Gaffalione and Joseph Jr. each lead their respective divisions after recording three wins apiece for the week, highlighted by the Pegasus World Cup. Gaffalione became the first jockey to surpass $2 million in purse earnings for 2026, while Joseph Jr. also crossed the $2 million plateau in the trainer standings.
While Gaffalione and Joseph Jr. emerged as new division leaders, jockey Alvarado and reigning Eclipse Award-winning trainer Bill Mott also climbed into the top 10 in their respective categories with strong weeks. Alvarado made five trips to the winner’s circle, including a four-win day and three graded stakes victories on Saturday at Gulfstream, which propelled him to sixth in the jockey standings with $1,143,023 in 2026 earnings. Mott won at a 36% clip with four victories last week, moving into eighth in the trainer standings with $693,447 in purse earnings for the year.
