Golden Tempo Ascends Equibase Rankings With Lecomte Stakes Score
RacingAll eyes were on Fair Grounds Jan. 17 with six stakes races held in the Big Easy on Saturday, including the Fasig-Tipton Silverbulletday Stakes on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks and the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes on the Road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, each offering a total of 42 points distributed to the top five finishers.
One of the most impressive performances of the weekend came from the Lecomte, where Golden Tempo rallied from last of 10 at the third point of call to secure a three-quarter length victory under Jose Ortiz. Notably, Golden Tempo lengthened his stride to 23.92 feet in the final half furlong and ran the final eighth of a mile in :12.98. Trainer Cherie DeVaux finished first and second in the Lecomte with Mesquite edging Carson Street by a neck for the runner-up spot. Golden Tempo earned $150,000 for the win and has moved into first on the 2026 Equibase leaderboard by purse earnings. The Curlin colt is undefeated from two career starts and now ranks second on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 20 points.
Taken by the Wind remained undefeated over the weekend with a victory by a neck in the Silverbulletday Stakes. She set a slow pace under Brian Hernandez Jr. and dug in to hold off Luv Your Neighbor. Taken by the Wind added 20 Kentucky Oaks qualifying points to her resume and is now third on the Oaks leaderboard with 30 points. The Silverbulletday was her third consecutive win and second straight stakes victory following a 5 ¼-length romp in the Grade 3 Pocahontas Stakes at Churchill Downs in September. Taken by the Wind ranks 11th in the overall Equibase standings and fourth in the 3-year-old filly division with $90,000 in 2026 earnings.
Man O Rose, a 6-year-old gelding and a homebred for B and B Zietz Stables, earned the highest Equibase Speed Figure of any horse in North America last week, posting a career-best 114 for his nine-length romp in the Don Valpredo California Cup Sprint Stakes at Santa Anita. This was his fourth straight stakes victory and his 10th triple-digit speed figure.
Flavien Prat became the first jockey this year in North America to surpass $1 million in purse earnings over the weekend. Prat continued his strong 2026 form last week with eight wins from 24 starts (33%) and $486,730 in earnings. He currently leads all jockeys by 2026 earnings, while Vicente Del-Cid holds the top spot by wins with 23. Del-Cid went 11-for-26 last week (42%) and is winning at a remarkable 40% for the year.
Brad Cox and Steve Asmussen, first and second in the 2026 trainer standings, both surpassed $1 million in earnings last week. Cox leads with 21 wins (34%) and $1,160,500, while Asmussen has 19 wins (16%) and $1,102,123. Linda Rice moved into third after a strong week at Aqueduct, posting seven wins at a 37% clip and $311,990 in earnings, bringing her 2026 total to $774,592.
