Equibase Rankings: Duel for Top-Earning Jockey Goes Down to the Wire
Racing
It was a relatively quiet week in Thoroughbred racing across North America, with just one graded stakes on the schedule Dec. 13, but the Equibase jockey standings remain fiercely contested, with Irad Ortiz Jr. and Flavien Prat locked in a battle for the top spot based on 2025 North American earnings. Both have more than $39 million in earnings with roughly two weeks remaining in the year.
After setting the single-season earnings record last week, Irad Ortiz Jr. maintained his lead by adding six wins at Gulfstream Park, pushing his 2025 earnings to $39,628,385. Flavien Prat remains close behind in second, trailing by just $385,204 after one victory from 13 mounts last week. Ortiz Jr. also leads all North American jockeys in wins with 340, while Prat continues to pace the standings in both stakes wins (71) and graded stakes victories (45). Ortiz Jr. ranks second in both of those categories. With only 11 graded stakes races remaining in 2025, six of them scheduled for Santa Anita Park’s opening day on Dec. 26, the race for year-end honors is far from decided.
The road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve continued Dec. 13 with the 45th running of the Los Alamitos Futurity. Litmus Test, a 2-year-old colt by Nyquist, justified his 3-5 favoritism in this year’s edition, taking command at the sixteenth pole and holding off a late rally from stablemate Blacksmith to win by 1 ¼ lengths under Juan Hernandez, giving trainer Bob Baffert a record 15th victory in the race. With the win, Litmus Test earned 10 Kentucky Derby qualifying points and moved into second place on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 19 total points. He moved into the top 10 on the 2025 earnings list among 2-year-old males, now ranked ninth with $350,188 in earnings.
