Kentucky’s Road to the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will be open for business Saturday when a field of nine contests the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland. The 1 1/16-mile test has been captured by two of the last three Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winners and another strong field has been assembled for Saturday’s renewal that will provide the victor with a free “Win and You’re In” spot in the Nov. 3 Juvenile at Santa Anita Park.

First held: 1938

1. The Wine Steward (8-1 morning-line odds): He’s undefeated with an open stakes win in the Bashford Manor Stakes and a victory the Funny Cide Stakes for New York-breds. He has improved with each start and should be a main contender from the rail.

JOCKEY: Luis Saez; TRAINER: Mike Maker

2. Timberlake (7-2): Was second in the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes but the time was slow and a longshot prevailed. Should be in the mix here, though he’s also cross-entered in the Champagne Stakes at Aqueduct.

JOCKEY: Florent Geroux; TRAINER: Brad Cox

3. Awesome Road (3-1): Looked sharp in a debut win and is bred to handle the distance. A series of fast workouts since then only adds to his appeal despite having just one start under his belt.

JOCKEY: Flavien Prat; TRAINER: Brad Cox

4. Baytown Chatterbox (50-1): Showed little in the Hopeful at 58-1 odds and seems overmatched here.

JOCKEY: Jane Elliott; TRAINER: Paul McEntee

5. West Saratoga (20-1): Has won his last two, capped by a score in the one-mile Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs. Should have little trouble with the distance and could be a contender with continued improvement.

JOCKEY: Gerardo Corrales; TRAINER: Larry Demeritte

6. Generous Tipper (15-1): Exploded for a big maiden win in August at Ellis Park and if he can duplicate that effort, he’ll be a force here. Yet there’s a good chance that he’ll bounce in his first try against stakes company.

JOCKEY: Brian J. Hernandez Jr.; TRAINER: Ken McPeek

7. Just Steel (12-1): Set fast fractions in the Hopeful before weakening in the final furlong and fading to seventh. Could stick around until the end if he gets soft fractions.

JOCKEY: Joel Rosario; TRAINER: D. Wayne Lukas

8. Northern Flame (20-1): He has showed improvement in all three starts and broke his maiden last time out at today’s distance. Looking at his speed figures, he’ll need another big step forward to be a factor here.

JOCKEY: Julien Leparoux; TRAINER: Ken McPeek

9. Locked (7-5): Got away slowly in his debut and rallied for third. Then flashed speed throughout and was a lopsided maiden winner. Has enough speed to offset a tough post and shapes up as the one to beat in this field.

JOCKEY: Jose Ortiz; TRAINER: Todd Pletcher

THE PICK: Locked

LIVE LONGSHOT: West Saratoga

SUPERFECTA: 9-3-5-1
