I was a freshman in high school when I fell off of my first rearing horse. The image of the mare on her hind legs in front of me, with my butt in the sand is seared into my brain: deep in the recesses, but it’s there nonetheless. I don’t remember hurting after that fall. Maybe I did but all I remember is thinking, this girl is going to fall over on top of me. She didn’t, and I don’t even remember it instilling a fear in me those following years, but here we are, over ten years later, and suddenly I’m thinking about it all the time.

This past month, a dream that I have had for a very long time came true. To most, it might not seem like a big deal. But for me, this is something that I have wanted to do since I was a little girl. I have been riding since I was four, but this was the first time I have ever entered the show ring on a horse: Fin and I got to experience both of our first shows together. We are one month into having Ginger in Disguise and starting our Retired Racehorse Project journey ,and I feel like it should only be two weeks into it. The Kansas weather has done nothing to help with all the rain, wind, and snow coming on days that we can work horses. And the days when we have had other commitments (which have not been many)…..it of course has been a lovely day where it’s not windy, the sun is out, and its 70 degrees outside.
