all in Triple Crown

Outsprinted early and fanned exceptionally wide entering the long Fair Grounds stretch, Disco Time found his groove and rallied from 10th in a field of 13 to outkick Gun Runner Stakes winner Built by a neck to win the $250,000 Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes for 3-year-olds Jan.

Prep season for the 151st Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve is well underway, and there’ll be little letup over the next three-plus months until the first leg of the Triple Crown is run May 3 at Churchill Downs.

With two seconds and a third in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve since 2018, trainer Chad Brown has high standards for his top 3-year-olds.

After a weekend in horse racing affected by weather conditions coast to coast, the activity picks back up to a large extent on the upcoming extended holiday weekend, with Fair Grounds hosting a Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve prep race on Saturday, Jan. 18, and several other tracks re-opening.

The Road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve gets a tad more important Saturday as the Lecomte Stakes ushers in a slate of preps worth a total of 42 qualifying points. The first five finishers in the two-turn test at Fair Grounds will receive 20-10-6-4-2 points in descending order.
