all in Breeders' Cup

The Thoroughbred is known for its athletic prowess and tenacious spirit, qualities that the humblest of claimers or the grandest of champions can show when put to the test. When an injury sends a horse to the sidelines, their performance when they return to the racetrack can show fans what that particular competitor is made of.

Buoyed by a 1 ½-length victory in the $7 million Longines Breeders' Cup Classic Nov. 2 at Del Mar, U.S.-based 3-year-old Sierra Leone improved his rating from a 120 to a 125 in the ninth edition of the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings for 2024.

Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Sierra Leone will race next year as a 4-year-old, Coolmore America announced in a social media post Nov. 7.

There were 14 Breeders’ Cup races run on Nov. 1-2, 2024, with purses of $1 million or more apiece, but those were not the only events held at Del Mar that offered seven-figure purses.

An abundance of top-tier racing this past weekend at the Breeders’ Cup resulted in major changes among the 2024 Equibase earnings standings in several categories.
