all in Breeders' Cup

The upcoming Labor Day weekend is one of the most highly anticipated three-day stretches on the racing calendar, as Saratoga Race Course’s summer meet concludes, Del Mar in California reaches the second-to-last weekend of its popular summer meet, and the boutique all-turf meet at Kentucky Downs opens.

Del Mar has a supremely rich racing history plus an incredibly fun connection to Hollywood stars, but when racing fans of my generation think of Del Mar, we think of the Pacific Classic.

A fees-paid automatic berth to the Nov. 2 Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf is up for grabs in the $500,000 Flower Bowl Stakes, one of three graded stakes taking place at Saratoga Race Course this Saturday.

The fields for the 14 races that comprise the Breeders’ Cup World Championships really begin to come into focus in summer and fall. This regular feature will offer a snapshot profile of one of the previous weekend’s standout stars, usually a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series winner, and whether I’m buying or selling their chances to win Nov. 1-2 at Del Mar.

It might seem hard to believe, but as little as 33 years ago, popular Del Mar racetrack in California lacked a signature race to define its summer stakes schedule.

There were plenty of quality races held each year at the seaside track, but none that could definitively rank as a must-watch, can’t-miss event.
