Mace and Jan met on a blind date at Aqueduct in 1962 and bought their first horse in 1964. Samantha was named for the song, “I Love You, Samantha,” a favorite of Jan’s, a former big band singer. Mace was the founder and owner of Macerich Co. of Santa Monica, which develops, owns and manages regional shopping malls. A powerful and respected owner-breeder in California racing, he co-founded Thoroughbred Owners of California.
Include Me Out became a Grade 1 winner in the 2012 Santa Margarita Stakes and added a second Grade 1 win later that year in the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes. Jay Em Ess earned an Eclipse Award with unbeaten champion 2-year-old male Declan’s Moon in 2004 and won the 2009 Hollywood Gold Cup with Rail Trip.
In recent years, Jay Em Ess Stable raced Grade 1 winner Masochistic and multiple Grade 1 winner By the Moon. Jay Em Ess co-owned Masochistic with Los Pollos Hermanos Racing.
