Ghostzapper: The Horse That Blazed a Brilliant Path in a Brief, But Potent Racing Career
Fully Subscribed Easy Spinster Winner, Adonius and Agate Also Shine Sunday at Keeneland
RacingA pair of scratches left the $598,000 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes with a field of three, but it was an extreme example of quality over quantity.
With nowhere to hide and no excuses to be had in their final prep toward potential starts in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff Oct. 31, three Grade 1 winners were set for battle at Keeneland. When they left the starting gate, two of them were multiple Grade 1 winners. When they crossed the finish line 1:50.60 later, all three of them were.
Klaravich Stable’s Fully Subscribed solidified her place as one of the favorites in the $2 million Distaff, and earned her second win as part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series after taking the Aug. 29 Personal Ensign Stakes at Saratoga Race Course by a dominant 9 3/4 lengths. The spoils of victory in the series include an automatic, fees-paid berth.
She gained extra momentum ahead of that goal by now having success on the Breeders’ Cup’s host track and at the same 1 1/8-mile distance, and according to Chad Brown’s near 20-year assistant Jose Hernandez, she really likes Lexington.
“She settled down; so quiet, so good here, even to saddle,” Hernandez said in the winner’s circle. “At Saratoga, she was a little nervous to saddle, here she was quiet. ... She’s been doing great here.”
Her two rivals were West Point Thoroughbreds’ Counting Stars, the leader of the 3-year-old filly division taking on older horses for the first time, and Godolphin’s Immersive, the 2024 champion 2-year-old filly who added a Grade 2 win this summer.
Because of the short field, Fully Subscribed was the odds-on favorite with Flavien Prat aboard and ran to it. Immersive and jockey Jose Ortiz set comfortable quarter-mile fractions of :24.19, :48.43, and 1:13.00 while Fully Subscribed kept between one to two lengths off in her pursuit. Meanwhile, Irad Ortiz Jr. found himself third aboard Counting Stars as she carried four pounds less than her rivals.
Prat was on the attack midway around the far turn and took command as they reached the quarter pole. Ortiz Jr. also got Counting Stars in gear as they passed by Immersive. However, she could never truly threaten Full Subscribed as Prat balanced letting his Tiz the Law filly extend enough to secure the Grade 1 victory while saving enough for four weeks from now.
Fully Subscribed was 3 1/4 lengths clear of Counting Stars with Immersive another six lengths back in third. Fully Subscribed paid $3.08 to win.
“It can be a cat and mouse game, but it was a fair race,” Prat said of the three-horse field. “She’s very professional, she has a ton of class, and she did very well.”
After ending her 3-year-old campaign with a pair of graded wins, Fully Subscribed started the 2026 season with two runner-up finishes in Grade 1 company, defeated a length by Shred the Gnar in the Fasig-Tipton La Troienne Stakes at Churchill Downs before finishing well in the wake of Nitrogen when beaten 12 3/4 lengths by that rival in the Ogden Phipps Stakes Presented by Ford at Saratoga.
She has shown signs of continuing to develop into a leader of the division that has many believing she will be more up to the task of Nitrogen in the Breeders’ Cup on the heels of three straight wins.
“She has improved every race, I thought. Every race she was getting better,” Prat said. “First time when she came back at Churchill she had a tough race, we had a tough draw. We were a bit disappointed the next race [Ogden Phipps], but after that she kept improving.”
Fully Subscribed now holds a record of 6-3-1 record from 10 starts for earnings of $1,441,800.
Agate Surges Late to Strike in Bourbon Stakes
Uncorking a powerful late rally, Dede McGehee’s homebred Agate burst from the pack to secure a 1 3/4-length victory in the $398,750 Castle & Key Bourbon Stakes. The gelded son of Gainesway stallion Karakontie earned an automatic berth into the $1 million Brown Advisory Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Oct. 30 at Keeneland.
“This horse was very willing. He listened to all my commands, responded when I needed him to and really finished up great,” winning jockey Tyler Gaffalione said. “I’m so proud of his effort today.”
Adonius Prevails in Indian Summer Stakes Thriller
Adonius kicked off his United States career in spectacular fashion, launching a late, outside rally to prevail by a head for the victory in the $291,100 Indian Summer Stakes Presented by Keeneland Select.
Making his first North American start, Adonius was fractious in the gate and got away slowly under John Velazquez. Wood Island and favorite Ruiva dueled for the lead through an opening half-mile in :21.15 and :44.37. Turning for home and looking to be in the clear, Ruiva idled under Irad Ortiz Jr. and a surge of horses started closing in on the leader.
“He was a little uncomfortable, so I took him outside of horses—now he’s trying to get away from the horses,” Velazquez said of Adonius. “I tried to cover up, and he was much better following somebody. Once I got him out, he had a nice kick. For a horse who’s never come behind, he was very professional.”
