Jockey Moya, Trainer Margotta Release Documentary on Shared Search for Redemption
Pop Culture
Over the years, we’ve seen plenty of horse racing stories adapted to the big screen. But there’s perhaps never been a more raw or authentic look into the personal lives of a jockey and trainer than the film “Brother: A Story of Recovery,” which was released last Friday.
Told through the first-hand accounts of Monmouth Park jockey Ramon Moya and trainer Anthony Margotta Jr., “Brother” is a story of loss and recovery. United by a parallel struggle with addiction, and the losses of their brothers, Moya and Margotta aren’t just describing the effects of drug and alcohol use, they’re hoping to save the lives of people facing the same struggle.
To that end, the 34-minute film was launched on a new website for “The Patrick and Carlos Hope Initiative.” Patrick Margotta, Anthony’s brother, passed away in 2008. Carlos, the brother of Ramon Moya, died of an accidental overdose in 2019.
According to the site, “The Patrick and Carlos Hope Initiative is dedicated to advancing public awareness of addiction and recovery through film and media initiatives that share recovery stories and connect individuals with critical community resources.”
