Equibase Rankings: Kentucky Derby Weekend Brings Major Movement
Racing
The dust has settled beneath the Twin Spires after the 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve and Longines Kentucky Oaks. Over the course of the week at Churchill Downs, fans not only witnessed some of the most talented 3-year-olds in the world compete in the Oaks and Derby, but also a total of 16 graded stakes races that featured elite fields. With nearly $18 million in total purse money offered in 16 graded stakes, these races reshaped the Equibase leaderboard in every division. We’ll focus on 3-year-old races in this review.
Golden Tempo, a Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable homebred by Curlin, went from last-to-first to win the 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby by a neck, making Cherie DeVaux the first female trainer in history to win the run for the roses and Jose Ortiz just the ninth jockey to score the Oaks and Derby double. Golden Tempo started the year with a last-to-first rally in the Lecomte Stakes before finishing third in both the Fasig-Tipton Risen Star Stakes and Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby before his Kentucky Derby victory. Having claimed the lion’s share of the $5 million Kentucky Derby purse along with money from his three other graded stakes appearances, Golden Tempo is now first on the overall Equibase leaderboard with $3.4 million in 2026 earnings.
Always a Runner, a 3-year-old Gun Runner filly, remained a perfect 3-for-3 with her 1 ¼ length win in the Kentucky Oaks, giving trainer Chad Brown his first Oaks win and jockey Jose Ortiz his second. Always a Runner debuted as a 3-year-old in February with a 6 ½-length win at Tampa Bay Downs in a dirt route before going on to win the Gazelle Stakes at Aqueduct in early April. With $984,800 in earnings, Always a Runner is now first in the 3-year-old filly division and sixth overall.

The Pat Day Mile Presented by SAP held for 3-year-olds on the Kentucky Derby undercard featured a battle between highly regarded Englishman and Crude Velocity, with the latter drawing clear to win b 3 ¾ lengths in a final time of 1:33.87, just 0.61 seconds off the track record set in 2014. Crude Velocity, a Beau Liam colt trained by Bob Baffert, started his career as a 3-year-old in March with a narrow victory at Santa Anita Park. Next out, he earned the best Equibase Speed Figure for any 3-year-old this year, a 116 for his 6 ¾-length win in an allowance optional claiming race at Santa Anita. Following his performance in the Pat Day Mile, Crude Velocity is a perfect 3-for-3 with $522,820 in earnings and moved into 11th in the 3-year-old male division and 25th on the overall leaderboard.
Along with winning both the Oaks and Derby, Jose Ortiz finished the week with eight wins, five of those in stakes races, and $6,210,014 in earnings. On Friday at Churchill Downs, Ortiz had a five-win day including back-to-back graded stakes wins in the Alysheba Stakes Presented by U.S. Army and Modesty Stakes Presented by Veritas Prime before winning the Oaks. He returned Saturday and finished runner-up in three Grade 1 races and two other stakes races before earning his first career win in the Kentucky Derby. Ortiz moved up to second in the North American jockey standings behind his brother Irad, as they both surpassed $13 million in 2026 earnings last week. When including earnings from winning the Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline aboard Magnitude, Jose Ortiz has $20,469,476 in earnings this year.
