Kentucky Derby week has officially come to an end, bringing with it one of the most action-packed weekends in Thoroughbred racing. Over the course of two thrilling days at Churchill Downs, fans witnessed 15 graded stakes races featuring elite fields and high-stakes competition. With a staggering $16.2 million in total purse money up for grabs, these races were more than just a lead-up to the run for the roses, they played a pivotal role in reshaping the Equibase earnings leaderboard.

From breakout performances to career-defining wins, Derby week delivered excitement at every turn. As the dust settles beneath the Twin Spires, we're taking a closer look at the biggest movers on the leaderboard, the standout horses, and what these results mean heading into the next several weeks, including the remaining two legs of the Triple Crown.

Sovereignty, a Godolphin homebred Into Mischief colt, won the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve May 3 by 1 ½ lengths, earning a career-best 103 Equibase Speed Figure for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott with Junior Alvarado aboard. Following his share of the $5 million Kentucky Derby purse, Sovereignty moved up 18 spots and is the new leader in the overall standings for Thoroughbreds racing in North America with $3,529,520 in 2025 earnings.

The 151st Run for the Roses was jockey Junior Alvarado’s first career Derby win, launching him into the history books as a Kentucky Derby winning jockey. Alvardo ended the week with three wins, all for Mott, and $3,472,053 in earnings, which has pushed him into sixth in the standings among jockeys racing in North America with $6,088,608.

With Sovereignty’s Derby win, Godolphin completed an Oaks-Derby double, as they took the May 2 Longines Kentucky Oaks with their homebred Good Cheer. Godolphin is just the fifth owner in history to win both the Oaks and Derby in the same year. Following a lucrative weekend, Godolphin now has $8,425,194 in 2025 North American earnings. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum’s global operation has won the Eclipse Award for outstanding owner for the last five years in a row. As for Good Cheer, the undefeated daughter of Medaglia d’Oro moved up 17 spots into fourth on the overall leaderboard among racehorses with $1,275,600 in 2025 earnings.

Flavien Prat (Eclipse Sportswire)

Flavien Prat, 2024’s Eclipse Award winner for outstanding jockey, became the new leader in the North American jockey standings after the weekend and the first jockey to surpass $11 million in 2025 earnings. Prat took seven trips to the winner’s circle last week, winning at a 17% clip and riding 49% in the money with $2,743,249 in earnings. Two of his wins were in graded stakes at Churchill, taking the Fasig-Tipton La Troienne Stakes on Raging Sea and the American Turf Stakes Presented by Ford aboard Zulu Kingdom, both for trainer Chad Brown. Along with his graded stakes victories last week, Prat finished third in the Kentucky Derby aboard Baeza. He has scheduled mounts the rest of the week at Belmont at the Big A, including three graded stakes mounts on Saturday.

Brad Cox expanded his lead in the trainer standings, becoming the first to surpass $11 million in 2025 earnings. Last week, Cox won at a tremendous 39% clip with 12 wins and $2,310,175 in earnings. He remains in first by over $1.1 million over Steve Asmussen. Cox dominated by wins last week; however Bill Mott takes the cake as the top earner last week in the standings. Mott had four wins last week with his horses running in the money 58% of the time with $3,508,728 in earnings. Following his second career Kentucky Derby victory, Mott has moved into fifth on the leaderboard with $6,087,895 in 2025 earnings.

Despite not having a Kentucky Derby starter for the first time in 21 years, Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher reached a major milestone last weekend, becoming the first trainer in history to surpass $500 million in career earnings. Wins at Churchill by Fierceness in the Alysheba Stakes Presented by Sentient Jet and Mindframe in the Churchill Downs Stakes Presented by Ford put Pletcher over the milestone. Through racing on May 6, Pletcher’s runners have made 26,055 starts with earnings of $503,433,854.
