CBS will air a segment on horse racing reform during its “60 Minutes” television news program Nov. 12. It is scheduled to broadcast Sunday along with two other show segments scheduled from 7-8 p.m. ET.

Correspondent Cecilia Vega will examine the wiretaps that helped successfully prosecute one of the biggest horse doping investigations in United States history. Lisa Lazarus, CEO of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, also spoke with Vega “to discuss the moment of reckoning and the sport’s future,” according to a “60 Minutes” press release.

A portion of the filming took place as far back as five months ago. A photograph promoting the story on the CBS website shows Vega conducting an interview while walking through the Belmont Park grandstand.

Wiretaps proved instrumental in the convictions of more than 30 individuals in both the Thoroughbred and Standardbred industries in a horse-doping scheme that resulted in arrests in March 2020. The government captured and trainers and veterinarians discussing the use of prohibited drugs in recorded telephone conversations and texts.

Thoroughbred trainers Jason Servis and Jorge Navarro were among those convicted and issued prison terms.

HISA, a private entity overseen by the Federal Trade Commission, is currently responsible for enforcing national, uniform safety and integrity rules in Thoroughbred racing in most of the United States, a responsibility that had previously fallen upon state commissions. Currently, litigation continues at the federal level that argues HISA is unconstitutional. The act authorizing HISA was signed into federal law in December 2020.
