Tony Ann

Tony Ann, a daughter of Cairo Prince, started her racing career in California with trainer Phil D’Amato and broke her maiden in her third start, winning a six-furlong turf sprint at Santa Anita by 3 ¼ lengths on Oct. 17, 2021. She one once more that year, taking a 1 1/18-mile turf race in November at Del Mar, but raced only three times during her 4-year-old season in 2022, picking up another win on turf and finishing seventh in her stakes debut.

After a start in November, Tony Ann did not race until late July 2023, when she returned in the five-furlong Daisycutter Stakes at Del Mar and finished a rallying second. D’Amato then shipped the now 5-year-old to Kentucky Downs for the lucrative Grade 2 AGS Ladies Turf Sprint Stakes on Sept. 9. She pressed the pace and kept on willingly to the finish of the 6 ½-furlong race to finish third by a neck.

Tony Ann remained in Kentucky and squared off against Caravel, winner of the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, in the Oct. 15 Grade 2 Franklin Stakes at Keeneland. With Flavien Prat aboard, the gray or roan mare rallied strongly in the stretch and edged odds-on Caravel by a neck to pick up her first stakes win.
