The city of New York was overcome with raw emotion and tension in the days, weeks, and months after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, and so that year’s World Championships were held under surreal conditions with police dogs searching vehicles, soldiers stationed throughout Belmont Park, and snipers positioned on the roof.
