Yoshito Yahagi, one of Japan’s leading trainers, oversaw that nation’s first two Breeders’ Cup World Championships winners when Loves Only You captured the Maker’s Mark Filly and Mare Turf and Marche Lorraine upset the Longines Distaff on Nov. 6, 2021 at Del Mar.
His other top runners include 2019 Cox Plate winner Lys Gracieux and 2020 Japanese Triple Crown winner Contrail.

In 2023, he made the trip to the United States to make his Kentucky Derby debut with Continuar, but decided not to run him based on subpar training. One year later, Yahagi campaigned another Kentucky Derby prospect, UAE Derby winner Forever Young. That colt finished third by a head in the 150th Derby after being bumped in deep stretch by runner-up Sierra Leone, and entered fall 2024 as a leading contender for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Forever Young finished a solid third in the Classic, and then came back for a sensational 4-year-old campaign that started with a win in the lucrative Saudi Cup. The colt finished third in the Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline, took a break of nearly six months, and then tuned up for a repeat start in the Classic with an easy win in a Japan stakes.
Yahagi, Forever Young, and a throng of supporters returned to Del Mar for the Nov. 1 Classic, and the colt gave his trainer a third Breeders’ Cup victory with a half-length score over 2024 winner Sierra Leone.
