The North American horse racing calendar turns over this Saturday, and horsemen, fans, and gamblers alike are all anticipating a 2022 that’s full of great racing, big scores, and more than anything else, a sense of normalcy resembling this time a couple of years ago… which will mean we’ve left the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic behind.

What’s been an eventful 2021 in the world of North American horse racing is about to end, and the upcoming weekend will feature a Kentucky Derby qualifying race at Remington Park before action winds down during Christmas week.

Following some important stakes on Dec. 4 in New York, the marquee events slow down for a couple of weeks in December, traditionally the least active month on the North American horse racing calendar.

The upcoming weekend in horse racing sees Aqueduct wind down its fall meet and two major racetracks kick off their marquee racing seasons, one a month and a half earlier than usual.

Oaklawn Park opens Friday, presenting racing in December for the first time in the track’s history. The new schedule includes inaugural stakes, 2-year-old racing, and a day honoring fan-favorite Whitmore. Hot Springs has also grown and changed since the track held its last season unaffected by the global pandemic.
