June was a big month for the dynamic duo that is Gray Magician and Imposing Ruler. Both boys tackled their first horse show last month, which also happened to be Gray’s first time off property in my program. While taking things slow is a key component of my program for Thoroughbreds coming off the track, it can be hard to put on the metaphorical blinders and focus only on my mounts. After watching others tackle first shows earlier on in the year, I’ve been fighting thoughts of feeling behind.

She’s So Fly, now affectionately known as Sophie, was born in March 2020. After only racing once, Sophie was retired by her breeder in 2022. Sophie arrived at After the Races in December 2023, where she waited patiently for her perfect match to come along.

Chloe Ras, a former assistant manager at After the Races, stayed connected to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance accredited organization and often browsed their website and Facebook page for potential horses.

This Saturday, Horseshoe Indianapolis is the place to be for horse racing fans and gamblers in the tristate and beyond, as the track and casino in Shelbyville, In., about 30 miles southeast of Indianapolis presents a fantastic day of premier races topped by the 31st running of the Indiana Derby for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds.

Independence Day falls on a Friday this year, setting up an exciting three-day weekend in North American horse racing highlighted by the biggest racecard of the meet at Horseshoe Indianapolis, a special holiday racing festival in New York, and the kickoff of the summer meet at western Kentucky’s Ellis Park.

America’s Best Racing has launched a monthly series to celebrate women in racing, explore the challenges they face in what has been a male-dominated industry, and highlight their achievements.

Viewers watching any of the broadcasts the New York Racing Association produces for FOX are sure to be struck by Acacia Clement’s expertise, self-assuredness and vivacious personality. They would never imagine she was once a shy child.

But she was. Painfully so.
