Well, here we are. Two weeks away from Thoroughbred Makeover, the big event that so many of us have been working tirelessly toward for the last 6-8 months. This update is not the one I want to be writing, and comes to you a week after I spent the day at King Animal Hospital, waiting for Mr Nobility to receive laser scarification on his soft palate. How did we get here?

Nestled up on “The Hill” at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., is a haven of horse racing history, a small stone structure that contains literal multitudes. Inside are photographs, books, magazines, and more, each sharing a line from the story of a sport. This is the Keeneland Library.

What would be the one word that describes Thoroughbred racing? It is a sport with a storied history that stretches back centuries, featuring majestic creatures and legend-provoking stories, and one that allows people from all walks of life to unite in one loud roar that echoes throughout sacred grandstands as a backdrop to the thundering of hooves.

For Jayson Werth, that one word is: iconic.

High-level Thoroughbred racing continues at tracks across North America this week, with special focus on a huge card Saturday, Sept. 21 at Parx Racing in Bensalem, Pa., highlighted by the Pennsylvania Derby and Cotillion Stakes.

This month marks my final update before the big Thoroughbred Makeover event in October, and it’s been quite a stressful ride! The biggest concern has been ensuring that both of my horses are fully prepared for the makeover show. Have I done everything possible to get them ready? Can I somehow keep them in a bubble to prevent any major injuries before the event? The list of worries goes on! Each horse is at a different stage in their training, with their own set of unique challenges.
