all in Aftercare

June was a big month for the dynamic duo that is Gray Magician and Imposing Ruler. Both boys tackled their first horse show last month, which also happened to be Gray’s first time off property in my program. While taking things slow is a key component of my program for Thoroughbreds coming off the track, it can be hard to put on the metaphorical blinders and focus only on my mounts. After watching others tackle first shows earlier on in the year, I’ve been fighting thoughts of feeling behind.

She’s So Fly, now affectionately known as Sophie, was born in March 2020. After only racing once, Sophie was retired by her breeder in 2022. Sophie arrived at After the Races in December 2023, where she waited patiently for her perfect match to come along.

Chloe Ras, a former assistant manager at After the Races, stayed connected to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance accredited organization and often browsed their website and Facebook page for potential horses.

After 15 years of leasing horses, Jenna Stockinger knew exactly what she was looking for in a horse of her own. She wanted a horse who was a kind, capable partner, and one that her sister could enjoy riding and showing, too. The search was slow and thoughtful, but none of the horses quite felt like the one.

It’s three and a half months until the Makeover, but who’s counting, right? Ha! But in all seriousness, this year of preparation and training with Salesman has just flown by. And writing these monthly updates just keeps sneaking up on me, making the months feel even shorter.

First hosted in 2017, the Real Rider Cup is back this week to support aftercare with 28 riders signed up to take part in the first part of the show hosted in Lexington, Ky. on June 28, with the second leg of the event hosted in Maryland during the Mars Maryland 5 Star event at Fair Hill on Oct. 18.
