all in Aftercare

Lora Eike was familiar with Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare (CTA) as she had previously adopted a 2009 gelding named Crafty Noble in 2019. In 2022, Eike was enlisted to help a friend find an off-the-track Thoroughbred, so she reached out to Kelley Stobie, co-founder, secretary, and executive director of CTA.

My last update saw Mr Nobility and I preparing for our first show on Aug. 5, a hunter/jumper show at a local barn nearby. It was meant to be a lovely little schooling show, only 10 minutes away, just a nice outing to see what kind of horse we are working with in the environment. The time is ticking down to the Thoroughbred Makeover, and as a trainer you are under pressure to try and prepare your horse for the big event. Each of the horses I have taken to Kentucky has been at a different stage of training and experience.

Good trainers spend a lot of time putting the foundation of training on a horse. This is, for the most part, the boring part of training. If it isn’t boring, you need to examine your approach and determine what’s wrong because the horse should not be struggling or resisting during this phase. The pace of the training should be comfortable for the horse.
