Southern Elegance in Hot Springs: A Guide to a Fashionable Arkansas Derby Day

I just returned from the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park, and I even won a little money! “Always bet on the longshots there,” a well-trusted advisor told me.

One thing to remember when someone from Arkansas says “the Derby” they are always referring to their derby – the Arkansas Derby.  If you have been to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and enjoyed your experience at Saratoga Race Course, make Hot Springs, Ark., your next horse-racing destination.

Hot Springs is a great town and Oaklawn Park is a fantastic racetrack.

Fashion is well-supported at Oaklawn and has been since it opened in 1904. What Southern woman doesn’t love a hat?

When you attend the races at Oaklawn you’ll see broad-brim hats — not as broad as the Kentucky Derby — and always demure and elegant. If you love your western wear, you will feel right at home here. There is always a great mix of cowgirl meets the city!

The popular colors are pinks, corals, greens, yellow, and ivory.

When it comes to fascinators, the smaller, more dainty accent styles are popular.

Men frequently wear a traditional, more conservative suit, and a well-styled classic fedora will always fit right in!

Always dress for the races, and I will see you at the track!
