With the turn of the calendar year approaching, the crew at America's Best Racing took a look back at our favorite moments from 2017.

Extra Footgear for a Spa Superstar

Watching Gun Runner win the Whitney Stakes with five shoes definitely stood out for me in 2017! Gun Runner, the handsome chestnut who was the powerhouse horse of 2017, won the Whitney with ease; but, in a truly bizarre twist, he picked up an extra shoe in his lap around the Saratoga dirt when his competitor Cautious Giant lost a slipper about halfway through the race. The horseshoe arced into the air and somehow landed perfectly in Gun Runner’s tail, making him the first horse to win the race with five shoes. Fortunately, no horses or jockeys were hurt in the incident, and it was easily my favorite racing moment of the year. –Penelope Miller

Farewell to a Phenomenal Fan Favorite

I didn’t get to attend a whole lot of live racing in 2017, but hands-down, my favorite moment was witnessing California Chrome in the Gulfstream Park walking ring before the Pegasus World Cup Invitational in January. I have never seen anything like it. He strolled in cool, calm, and collected while thousands of fans went berserk, packed in tightly, 360 degrees around the ring and as much as three stories high. Cameras and voices raised in unison for the champion’s final public appearance. It was truly electrifying. –Christina Moore

Bedazzling SoCal Breeders’ Cup

My live racing experience was limited to Kentucky in 2017, and as usual I visited each of the commonwealth’s five tracks at least once. All have something to recommend them, and Keeneland’s and Churchill Downs’s reputations in particular need no extra hype. That being said, the lasting experience for me in 2017 was witnessing Del Mar host the Breeders’ Cup World Championships for the first time vicariously – through social media, an excellent NBC Sports broadcast, and last but certainly not least, as presented by America’s Best Racing’s talented video team. Bing Crosby’s and Pat O’Brien’s realized Hollywood dream of a racetrack could not have appeared more alluring than it did throughout the duration of the Breeders’ Cup – everything that’s great about the sport was on display, and that bodes well as horse racing welcomes a new generation of fans in 2018. –Patrick Reed

A New Convention for Horse Racing Enthusiasts

For me, the most memorable experience was the industry rallying together with fans and horseplayers for the first time at Equestricon. It was an incredible thing to watch unfold. Naturally, as a co-founder of the event, it hit me on a very emotional level. Our idea was to “Celebrate Racing” and it was cool to see so many enthusiastic fans and participants of the sport come together to do just that. What made it even better was watching the topic of aftercare and the work of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance elevated to the highest level of importance throughout the convention. Building on that success, the second Equestricon is slated for Breeders’ Cup week 2018 in the host city, Louisville. –Dan Tordjman

Arrogate Ascends in the Desert

For me, the most memorable moment of the year was the 2017 Dubai World Cup, the centerpiece of an international broadcast featuring some of the best racehorses in the world. The World Cup was headlined by a matchup between Arrogate at the absolute pinnacle of his career arc versus rising star Gun Runner. When Arrogate trailed the field early after a terrible start and was forced to race wide throughout, it looked like his winning streak would end in the United Arab Emirates. Instead, he unleashed one of the most devastating final charges I’ve ever seen to inhale Gun Runner with ground-devouring strides for a remarkable win. He extended his winning streak to seven in the World Cup and, while that would be the last victory of his career, that race will be how I always remember Arrogate. –Mike Curry

Calzado Extra para una Superestrella en el Spa

¡Mirar a Gun Runner ganar el Whitney Stakes con cinco herraduras me llamó realmente la atención en el 2017! Gun Runner, el apuesto alazán que fuera el enérgico caballo de 2017, ganó el Whitney con comodidad; pero en un giro ciertamente extraño, él adquirió un herraje extra en su vuelta por el circuito de arena de Saratoga cuando su competidor perdió una zapatilla del herraje cuando faltaba todavía la mitad de la carrera. La herradura se arqueó en el aire y de alguna manera aterrizó perfectamente en la cola de Gun Runner, convirtiéndolo en el primer caballo en ganar una carrera con cinco herrajes. Nunca he visto algo así. Paseó tranquilo, apacible y sereno mientras miles de aficionados estaban enloquecidos, apretados, 360 grados alrededor del recinto hasta una altura de tres pisos. Deslumbrante Experiencia de las Breeders’ Cup en el Sur de California

Mi experiencia de carreras en vivo estuvo limitada en 2017 a Kentucky, y como es usual yo visité cada uno de los cinco hipódromos de la mancomunidad al menos una vez. Todas tienen algo que las recomienda, y la reputación de Keeneland y Churchill Downs en particular, no necesita de exageración adicional. Dicho esto, para mí la experiencia más impactante para mí en el 2017 fue ser testigo del hospedaje que por primera vez Del Mar brindó al Campeonato Mundial de las Breeders’ Cup, e indirectamente – a través de los medios, de una excelente transmisión de NBC Sports, y finalmente pero no menos importante, de la presentación del talentoso equipo de video de America’s Best Racing. La cristalización del sueño de un hipódromo que en Hollywood tuvieron Bing Crosby y Pat O’Brien, no pudo haber sido más atractivo de lo que fue durante el desarrollo de las Breeders’ Cup – se mostró todo aquello que engrandece a esta actividad, y eso es un buen augurio en tanto las carreras de caballos dan la bienvenida a una nueva generación de aficionados para el 2018. –Patrick Reed

Una Nueva Convención para Hípicos Entusiastas

Para mí, la más memorable experiencia fue ver el apoyo conjunto que por primera vez tuvo la industria con aficionados e hípicos en Equestricon. Fue algo increíble ver que se llevara a cabo. Naturalmente, como co-fundador del evento, me conmueve en un nivel emocional. Nuestra idea era “Celebrar las Carreras” y fue muy bueno ver a muchos entusiastas aficionados y participantes reunirse para tal fin. Lo que lo hizo aún mejor fue observar que el tópico de los cuidados para el retiro de purasangres y el trabajo de Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance se elevó al más alto nivel de importancia durante la convención. A partir de ese suceso, el segundo Equestricon está programado para la semana de las Breeders’ Cup 2018 en la ciudad anfitriona, Louisville. –Dan Tordjman

La Remontada de Arrogate en el Desierto

Para mí, el momento más perdurable del año fue la 2017 Dubai World Cup, la pieza central de una transmisión internacional que presentó a algunos de los mejores caballos de carrera del mundo. La Copa Mundial estuvo encabezada por un match entre Arrogate en el pináculo absoluto de su campaña versus la estrella emergente de Gun Runner. Cuando Arrogate quedó inicialmente rezagado en el grupo después de una terrible partida y fue obligado a correr abierto todo el tiempo, parecía que su racha ganadora terminaría en los Emiratos Árabes Unidos. En cambio, él desarrolló una de las cargas finales más devastadoras que yo haya visto inhalándose a Gun Runner con brazadas devoradoras para un triunfo notable. Extendió su racha triunfal a siete en la Copa Mundial y, aunque esa sería la última victoria de su campaña, esa carrera será la forma en que yo siempre recordaré a Arrogate. –Mike Curry
