Reef Runner got hot in the second half of his 4-year-old season in 2025 to become one of the most fearsome turf sprinters on the West coast. His hot streak actually started at Gulfstream Park where he won a $70,000 overnight handicap going five furlongs on August 3. Trainer David Fawkes then brought him out west to Del Mar on Aug. 30 to test the waters in the five-furlong Grade 3 Green Flash Handicap. He won the Green Flash but was disqualified and placed second behind Motorious for causing interference.

Reef Runner did not wait long to get his revenge. He won his following start, this time with no mishap, to take the Grade 2 $200,000 Eddie D. Stakes going 6 1/2 furlongs on the downhill turf course at Santa Anita on Sept. 27. Reef Runner came from last in an eight-horse field in the Eddie D. and closed fast to get up and win by a half a length in a time of 1:11.65.
