Maiden winner Patch acquitted himself well in his first graded stakes try on April 1, finishing second to Girvin in the Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds. That win gave the Todd Pletcher-trained son of Union Rags 40 qualifying points for the 2017 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands. Breaking from the far-outside post position in the Kentucky Derby, Patch encountered an extremely rough trip that compromised his chances. He finished a nonthreatening 14th in the 20-horse field.

Patch entered the Louisiana Derby off of a sharp 1 ¾-length score in a one-mile maiden special weight at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 18. He is owned and was bred by Brad Kelley’s Calumet Farm.
