Never Explain

Never Explain became a Graded stakes winner in his 15th career start when he won the Grade 3 $200,000 Dinner Party Stakes at Pimlico on the Preakness Day undercard on May 20, 2023.  Sent off as the 15-1 odds longest shot on the board in a field of seven in the Dinner Party, Never Explain stalked the pace and then surged at the wire to prevail in a close multi-horse finish at the wire. Never Explain won the Dinner Party by a half a length and ran the 1 1/8 miles on firm turf in a time of 1:46.14.

Earlier in his career, Never Explain won his maiden race at the age of 3 at Indiana Grand on June 16, 2021. He had an earlier win at Pimlico in a first-level allowance race exactly a year before winning the Dinner Party on May 20, 2022.

Never Explain won back-to-back allowance optional claiming races at Tampa Bay Downs in early 2023 to start his 5-year-old season in career-best form. Following the Dinner Party Stakes, he finished second and third in graded stakes at Monmouth Park and Saratoga before checking in fourth in his first Grade 1 attempt, the Arlington Million Stakes at Colonial Downs. 

The dark bay or brown horse closed out his 2023 campaign with a ninth-place finish in the FanDuel Kentucky Turf Cup Stakes and was given a break after that start. He returned for a 6-year-old campaign, and returned to his winning ways, on Feb. 3, 2024, rallying in the stretch to win the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Stakes with Vincent Cheminaud aboard. 

Never Explain is trained by Shug McGaughey. He was bred in Kentucky by the sire Street Sense out of the mare Black Oak by Forestry.
