Money Moves, a son of Candy Ride, made his career debut in February 2020 and turned heads at Gulfstream Park with a 1 ¼-length score in a six furlong maiden on a sloppy track. He returned on March 27 at Gulfstream in a one-turn mile allowance optional claiming race and won by 2 ¾ lengths, gaining some buzz as a late-developing Triple Crown contender. However, Money Moves did not race again until July 25, and returned in a 1 1/8-mile allowance optional claiming race competing against older horses at Saratoga.

He returned on March 27 at Gulfstream in a one-turn mile allowance optional claiming race and won by 2 ¾ lengths, gaining some buzz as a late-developing Triple Crown contender. However, Money Moves did not race again until July 25, and returned in a 1 1/8-mile allowance optional claiming race competing against older horses at Saratoga. He ran very well off of the four-month layoff and stretching out to two turns, fighting gamely in the stretch and losing by a neck to 5-year-old gelding Prioritize.
With the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve delayed until September, owners Robert LaPenta and Bortolazzo Stable made a decision a week before the Sept. 5 race to enter Money Moves in the run for the roses, and he gained a spot in the starting gate as several contenders that had qualifying points passed on the race.
