Lightening Larry

Lightening Larry, a son of Canadian Horse of the Year Uncaptured, broke his maiden in his second career start on June 18, 2021, at Gulfstream Park. He won that five-furlong sprint restricted to Florida-breds by two lengths after contesting the early pace.

Over the next 11 months, Lightening Larry continued to run well in Florida, winning twice more including a six-furlong stakes at Gulfstream Park on New Year’s Day 2022. His owners transferred him to young trainer Jorge Delgado after that win, and in his first start for Delgado the colt finished second in the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Sophomore Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on March 27.

Delgado trained Lightening Larry up to a big assignment for his third start at age 3, the Grade 3 Chick Lang Stakes May 21 at Pimlico on the Preakness Stakes undercard. With Chantal Sutherland in the irons for the first time, Lightening Larry sat just off a hot pace set by Cogburn and outfought that foe in midstretch en route to a breakthrough three-quarter length victory, his fourth in nine starts. It was the first graded stakes win for Delgado.

Owner Lea Farms bought Lightening Larry for $50,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. March 2-year-olds in training auction. He is out of the winning Malibu Moon mare Moon and Sun.
