Henry Q won one out of three starts for trainer Doug O’Neill in California before he was transferred to trainer Todd Fincher in New Mexico. He made his first start for Tincher in the Mine That Bird Derby on Feb. 28, 2023, and cruised on the lead before drawing away to a 14 ¾-length win as the 4-5 favorite.
Henry Q won one out of three starts for trainer Doug O’Neill in California before he was transferred to trainer Todd Fincher in New Mexico. He made his first start for Tincher in the Mine That Bird Derby on Feb. 28, 2023, and cruised on the lead before drawing away to a 14 ¾-length win as the 4-5 favorite.
That effort made Henry Q the 8-5 second betting choice in the Grade 3 Sunland Park Derby on March 26. He engaged California shipper and favorite Hard to Figure in a taxing speed duel for the first six furlongs, and put away that foe early in the homestretch before beginning to tire. Henry Q finished third behind longshots Wild On Ice and Low Expectations in his graded stakes bow. Because he is not Triple Crown nominated, Henry Q did not earn any qualifying points for the 2023 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve.
The Blame colt is out of the winning Malibu Moon mare Lunar Empress.
