Captain Cook made his career debut as a 2-year-old at Churchill Downs and won his maiden race in his second lifetime outing on Dec. 27, 2024, at Aqueduct. Captain Cook then joined became a stakes winner in his third start, which came in his 3-year-old debut in the $250,000 Withers Stakes going 1 1/8 miles at Aqueduct on Feb. 1, 2025. The Withers Stakes is one of the 3-year-old season's first 1 1/8-mile tests on the Triple Crown trail and offered qualifying points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. With his victory, Captain Cook earned 20 Derby points.

Captain Cook made his next start in the Grade 2 $750,000 Wood Memorial Stakes presented by Resorts World Casino going 1 1/8 miles at Aqueduct on April 5. He pressed the pace of front runner Rodriguez but could not keep pace witgh that rival in the stretch and faded to fourth in the 10-horse field. The Wood Memorial was a maximum Kentucky Derby points race, and Captain Cook's fourth-place finish earned him another 15 points for a total of 35.
Captain Cook is trained by Richard Dutrow Jr. He was bred in Kentucky by the sire Practical Joke out of the mare Pow Wow Wow by Indian Charlie.
