After back-to-back runner-up finishes in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity and the FrontRunner Stakes to close his 2-year-old season, Calculator earned a breakthrough win in his 2015 debut in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes.
The In Summation horse competed in several stakes races over the next two years without a victory, with his best efforts coming in runner-up finishes in the 2016 Grade 1 Carter Handicap, beaten a head by Salutos Amigos, the 2016 Grade 2 Churchill Downs Stakes, and the 2017 Grade 1 Pat O'Brien Stakes.

Miller purchased Calculator for $132,000 at the 2014 OBS spring sale of 2-year-olds in training. His dam (mother) is the unraced Alphabet Soup mare Back to Basics, a half-sister (same dam, different sire [father]) to Grade 3 winner Atticus Kristy and stakes winners Distorted Reality and Fiery Dancer. This family also features Grade 1 winners Shackleford and Lady Joanne, and, a little deeper in the pedigree, champion and sire Known Fact as well as Grade 1 winner and sire Tentam.
