Batten Down began his career in January of his 3-year-old year and won his maiden race in his fourth career start with a 8 3/4-length victory when geared down in the stretch in a 1 1/4-mile dirt race at Churchill Downs on April 30, 2024.

Following his maiden win, Batten Down made his next start in the Grade 3 $500,000 Ohio Derby going 1 1/8 miles at Thistledown on June 22. Sent off as the 3-1 second choice on the tote board in a field of six 3-year-olds in the Ohio Derby, Batten Down sent right for the lead and established a big clear advantage in front. He then fended off challenges turning for home and extended to an easy front-running score by 1 3/4 lengths in a time of 1:50.20 with Junior Alvarado aboard.
Batten Down is trained by Bill Mott for Juddmonte. He was bred in Kentucky by the sire Tapit out of the mare Close Hatches by First Defense. Close Hatches was a multiple Graded stakes winner during an illustrious career as a racehorse. Batten Down is a full brother to 2019 Tampa Bay Derby winner and Wood Memorial winner Tacitus, who also placed third in the 2019 Kentucky Derby, second in the 2019 Belmont Stakes, and second in the 2019 Travers Stakes.
