Ancient Rome, a War Front colt based in Europe, traveled over to the U.S. for a start in the $2 million Mint Millions Stakes Sept. 2, 2023, at Kentucky Downs and won his North American debut under Jamie Spencer. The Charlie Hills-trained colt rallied strongly in the stretch to just get up and edge pacesetter Stitched at the finish, taking the one-mile, Grade 3 race by a half-length.

Ancient Rome had won five of 15 career starts before shipping to Kentucky. He impressed as a juvenile in 2021 by taking three of six starts, including a Group 3 race in France, and also finished second and third in Group 1 stakes that year. He continued to compete respectably without a signature win in 2022 and 2023, and won a handicap race at the Goodwood meet in England on Aug. 1 before making the international trip.
Kentucky-bred Ancient Rome received total winnings of $1,176,600 in the Mint Millions by being eligible via the Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund. He is out of multiple Group 3 winner and multiple Group-1 placed Gagnoa, a daughter of the legendary Sadler’s Wells and a half-sister to English Derby winner and sire Pour Moi. Gagnoa has also produced Group 3 winner Etoile, the dam of U.S. stakes winner No Nay Mets.
