Risk Taking was purchased for $240,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2019. In his third start, he handily won a 1 1/8 mile maiden special weight at Aqueduct on Dec. 13 by 2 1/2 lengths, for trainer Chad Brown.

He established himself as a legitimate contender for the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve on Feb. 6 at Aqueduct, as he won the Grade 3 Withers Stakes handily. He sat in mid-pack in the early stages, then closed strongly on the outside to win by 3 3/4 lengths. He went 1 1/8 miles on dirt in 1:51.91, earning ten qualifying points towards the Derby in the process.
Risk Taking is sired by multiple grade 1 winner Medaglia d'Oro. His dam, Run a Risk, was stakes-placed several times on the grass.
