Overtook finished fourth in his debut, going six furlongs at Belmont Park on Oct. 10. In his next start, in which he stretched out to 1 1/8 miles, he was a distant third at Aqueduct on Nov. 9.
In his third start, Overtook broke through to win for the first time. At Aqueduct on Dec. 20, he came from well behind with a six-wide rally for a two-length victory.

In his 3-year-old debut, he finished a strong-closing second in the Grade 3 Withers Stakes at Aqueduct on Feb. 6. With that performance, he earned four points towards the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve.
Overtook went to the sidelines after that race, resurfacing in the Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont on May 8. He finished third after rating off the pace.
Overtook was purchased for $1 million at the Keeneland September Yearling sale in 2019. He's sired by two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, out of the Grade 1-winning mare Got Lucky.
