Twenty-Five Quirky Betting Superstitions

Many horseplayers have superstitions about what they do and don't do while betting. (Eclipse Sportswire)

It was June 6, 2015, and I was frantically running around Belmont Park, simultaneously hosting an event with more than 150 guests, dipping in and out of conversations and, all the while, keeping an eye on the board to see how many minutes to post there were before the Belmont Stakes.

With about 25 minutes to post, I decided to sneak away for a minute and make a few bets. Being the superstitious horseplayer I am, I decided to make a bet - not for me to win money, but for American Pharoah to win the Triple Crown. Knowing that I had been ice cold when betting of late, I was positive that if I bet on American Pharoah to win, it would surely guarantee that he would lose. After all, I had previously bet on Triple Crown hopefuls Smarty Jones (2004), Big Brown (2008) and California Chrome (2014). Feeling confident that Frosted was the only horse who could beat American Pharoah, I placed a large exacta bet: Frosted over most of the field. And, voila ...

OK, so I get that it sounds completely insane that anyone thinks their bets might actually affect the outcome of a race. But if you play the races for long enough, you start to develop superstitions. The one above was your classic "Eddie Mush" (character from the movie "A Bronx Tale"), which basically dictates that some players (like me, when I'm having a bad day) can mush the chances of any horse - even an American Pharoah.

So, rather than mush the horse, I did a reverse mush and mushed the only horse who had any shot at beating him. If you think that's nuts, check out some of these other racing superstitions I collected in a survey of some fellow horse players. It includes things players do and don't do when they're playing the races.
