Interpreting the Odds

May the odds be ever in your favor!

That memorable line from the hit movie “Hunger Games” referred to a random drawing of “winning” individuals who were then obligated to battle to the death for the entertainment of the hierarchy.

When playing the races, think more of being involved a WWE-style battle royal against fellow bettors from across the country.

Regardless of your wagering experience or how you come up with your selections, on any given day, you too could hit it big.

THE FIRST STEP TO WAGERING IS UNDERSTANDING WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT

Sure, the more often you wager (I prefer to call it “investing”), the more knowledge and experience comes into play, but trust me, a good percentage of bomber payoffs are captured by people who were simply betting birthday numbers or hunch plays!

That being said, if you’re going to dip your toe into the wagering pools, it only makes sense to understand how odds and payoffs work.

10. Pari-mutuel wagering - Originated by Frenchman Pierre Oller, the definition of pari-mutuel-wagering is “betting amongst ourselves”. The track has no interest in which horses win or lose, but acts only as an agent. A percentage of money wagered into each race pool, the “take out,” is divided amongst the track owner, the state and the horsemen for purses. The vast majority is redistributed to winning ticket holders.  

9. The track wants you to win – That’s the beauty of pari-mutuel wagering. In essence, we’re wagering against each other. Unlike a casino, the track has no interest in who wins or loses. They simply act as a broker. Based on house-advantage percentages and average time spent at “play,” the casino is a guaranteed winner. That’s how Las Vegas was built.

8. Passing time versus social enjoyment - Scratch-off tickets, pulling a slot machine or video poker handle, numbers popping up on a screen or a watching a giant wheel spin around and around and around – mindless. Not to mention that the take-out rate on Keno is roughly 29-percent and the Lottery is 50-percent. Horse racing is a social game of excitement. In a visually stimulating environment, there is a race every 25 minutes. Enjoy the company of people, take in the sights, and balance relaxation with excitement!

7. How odds are determined - Odds are an indication of the popularity of a given horse in comparison with others in the race. Odds are figured by dividing the amount wagered on a given horse into the total amount wagered, less the amount deducted by the track and state law.

6. Payouts - The amount of the winnings is determined by how many correct tickets there are for a given wager. The more people holding the winning combination, the less the payoff will be. The fewer the accurate tickets on a given wager, the higher the winnings will be. In a trifecta for example, if the top three finishers are all favorites, the payout will be minimal. On the other hand, if the top three finishers are longshots, a much smaller percentage of people will have the correct combination of horses on their ticket, and therefore the return will be much more lucrative.

5. The morning line - The morning line is the listing of the odds you see in the entries and track program. The intention is to give the wagering public a general idea of what the odds on each horse are expected to be at post time. It’s a subjective system, and is merely one person’s educated guess. Keep in mind that the morning-line odds do not reflect the odds maker’s selections as to who they personally think will win the race. They are merely a prediction of how the betting public is expected to wager on that race. I am currently the morning-line odds maker for Arlington Park, Indiana Downs and Kentucky Downs.  

4. Tracking the odds – Often found in the infield of a racetrack, the tote board is a large numeric display structure used to relay up to-the-minute odds, payout information and a countdown of minutes until the next race. A track’s television signal provides the same information. Via on-track, off-track and online wagering, dollars funnel into the betting pools constantly, up until race time. Based on the dollars bet, odds change roughly every 40 seconds. Wagering closes when the gate opens and the bell sounds.

3. Risk versus reward – Using the 2013 summer meet at Arlington Park as an example, roughly 33-percent of the races were won by the “favored” horse with the most win dollars placed on them; 54-percent were won by horses at odds of 3-1 or less; 35-percent were won by horses between the odds of 7-2 and 9-1; and 11-percent were won by longshots, odds 10-1 and higher. Understanding how often horses with various odds win, in general, could help you determine a comfort zone.

2. Keep the odds in your favor – When playing wagers with the potential for lucrative payoffs (trifecta, superfecta, Pick 4, etc.), always bet in the smallest increment offered. If you win and the payoff exceeds $600, the government views it as “earnings,” and taxes are due. To put it in perspective, if a $1 Superfecta pays $1,000 (above the $600 tax line) the dime payout is $100. If you really want to bet a Superfecta for a $1, then play it ten times at a dime each! When you make a wager, the government takes a cut of the pool. They shouldn’t be allowed to take more when you win!

1. Enjoy! - Most importantly, with all horse racing has to offer, win or lose, the odds of having a fantastic time at the track are ALWAYS in your favor!

Interpretando las Probabilidades

¡Pueda que las probabilidades estén siempre a tu favor!

Esa línea memorable del éxito cinematográfico "Los Juegos del Hambre" está referida al sorteo o la selección al azar de individuos, quienes al salir "ganadores" tenían entonces que obligatoriamente enfrentarse en una batalla a muerte, para el entretenimiento de las cúpulas de poder.

Cuando jugamos en las carreras de caballos, tenemos que pensar más en estar envueltos en una suerte de batalla real al estilo de lucha libre, en contra de otros apostadores de todo el país. 

Sin menoscabo de tu experiencia como apostador o cómo te va con tus pronósticos, cualquiera sea el día, tú también puedes dar un gran golpe.

EL PRIMER PASO PARA APOSTAR ES COMPRENDER QUÉ ES LO QUE ESTÁS MIRANDO

Claro que, cuanto más apuestes (Yo prefiero llamarlo "inviertas"), más experiencia y conocimientos conseguirás, pero créeme, un buen porcentaje de dividendos "bombazos" son capturados por gente que simplemente apostó al número de su cumpleaños o a puras corazonadas!

Dicho esto, si estás dispuesto a poner el pie en la piscina de las apuestas, tiene sentido entender cómo funcionan las probabilidades y cómo trabajan los dividendos.

10. Apuestas Pari-mutuel - Desarrolladas por el francés Pierre Oller, la definición de apuestas pari-mutuel-es “apostando entre nosotros mismos”. El hipódromo no tiene interés alguno en cuál caballo gana o pierde, sino que actúa sólo como agente. Un porcentaje del dinero apostado en el pozo total de cada carrera, la "detracción", es dividida entre el hipódromo organizador, el estado, y los premios para los propietarios de los caballos que compiten. La gran mayoría es redistribuida a los poseedores de boletos ganadores.

9. El hipódromo desea que tú ganes – Esa es la belleza de las apuestas pari-mutuel. En esencia, estamos apostando unos contra otros. A diferencia de un casino, el hipódromo no tiene interés en quién gane o quién pierda. Simplemente actúa como un corredor de las apuestas. Basado en el porcentaje favorable de la casa y el promedio de tiempo que se invierte "jugando", el casino es un ganador garantizado. De ese modo es que se construyó Las Vegas.

8. Gastando el tiempo versus disfrute social - Tachando boletos, jalando la palanca de un traga monedas, o abriendo una mano de póker de video, viendo números apareciendo en una pantalla o mirando girar una ruleta enorme una y una y otra vez – no tiene sentido. Sin mencionar que el promedio de la detracción en Keno es aproximadamente de un 29 por ciento y en la Lotería es del 50 por ciento. Las carreras de caballos son un pasatiempo social muy emocionante. En un entorno visual muy estimulante, hay una carrera cada 25 minutos. !Se disfruta la compañía de otras personas, es un placer para la vista y hay un buen balance entre relajación y excitación!

7. ¿Cómo se determinan los dividendos? - Los dividendos son un indicativo de la popularidad de un caballo determinado, en comparación con la de otros en una misma carrera. Se calculan dividiendo la cantidad jugada a un caballo determinado entre el total de pozo de la apuesta, una vez descontada la cantidad deducida por el hipódromo y las leyes del estado.

6. Los Pagos - La cantidad de ganadores está determinada por cuántos tickets acertados hay para una apuesta dada. A mayor cantidad de gente con la combinación ganadora, será menor el pago. A menor sea el número de tickets que hayan acertado una apuesta determinada, más elevados serán sus dividendos. En una trifecta, por ejemplo, si los tres primeros caballos son todos favoritos, el pago será mínimo. Por el contrario, si los tres primeros caballos son golpes, un pequeño grupo de apostadores tendrá esa combinación en su boleto, y en consecuencia, el retorno será mucho más lucrativo.

5. La línea matinal - La línea matinal es un listado de dividendos que se pueden ver en las inscripciones y en el programa del hipódromo. La intención es dar al público apostador una idea de cuáles son los dividendos que se esperan para cada caballo al momento de la partida. Es un sistema subjetivo y es meramente, la apreciación personal de un especialista. Tengan en cuenta que los dividendos de la línea matinal, no reflejan necesariamente las simpatías personales de quien las hace, ni cuál caballo cree esa persona que deberá ganar la carrera. Son simplemente una predicción de cómo se espera que el público apueste al momento de la carrera. Yo soy actualmente quien hace la línea matinal para Arlington Park, Indiana Downs and Kentucky Downs. 

4. Siguiendo los dividendos. A menudo instalado en la parte interior de la pista de carreras, el totalizador electrónico es una larga pantalla de estructura numérica usada para actualizar minuto a minuto la información de los dividendos y pagos y para informar el tiempo restante para que largue la siguiente carrera. La señal televisiva del hipódromo provee también la misma información. Ya sea en el hipódromo, fuera de él, o apostando en línea, los dólares son canalizados hacia el pozo constantemente, hasta el momento de la partida. 3. Riesgo versus recompensa – Usando el mitin de verano de 2013 en Arlington Park como ejemplo, aproximadamente un 33 por ciento de las carreras fueron ganadas por el caballo favorito, con la mayoría de dólares ganadores apostados a él; un 54 por ciento fueron ganadas por caballos con un dividendo de 3-1 o menos; 35 por ciento fueron ganadas por caballos con dividendos entre 7-2 y 9-1; y 11 por ciento fueron ganadas por golpes, es decir, caballos con un dividendo de 10-1 o mayor. Entendiendo cuán a menudo caballos de variados dividendos ganan, podría en general, ayudarte a determinar una zona de confort. 

2. Mantén los dividendos a tu favor. – Cuando se apuestan jugadas con potencial de pagos muy lucrativos (trifecta, superfecta, Pick 4, etc.), apuesta siempre al más pequeño valor ofrecido. Si ganas y el pago excede los 600 dólares, el gobierno verá ello como "ingreso" y aplicará impuestos. Poniéndolo en perspectiva, si una $1 Superfecta paga $1,000 (por encima de los $600 de la línea de impuesto) el pago de la apuesta de diez centavos es $100. Si quieres apostar realmente una Superfecta de $1, entonces juégala 10 veces a diez centavos cada vez! Cuando haces una apuesta, el gobierno toma una tajada del pozo. Ellos no deberían estar permitidos a tomar más cuando ganas!

1. Disfruta! - Pero lo más importante, con todo lo que las carreras de caballos tienen que ofrecer, ganes o pierdas, las probabilidades de que tengas un fantástico momento en el hipódromo, están SIEMPRE a tu favor!
