For over 40 years, horse racing fans at Churchill Downs and Keeneland enjoyed gathering at areas where Percy Pool Sr. tended bar. Pool, who retired in 2015 and passed away in 2024, was admired for his professionalism and friendly personality, so much so that a group of owners named a talented filly in his honor – Percy’s Bar.
Percy Pool’s daughter Nichelle and granddaughter London Lopez met Percy’s Bar for the first time as she prepared to race in the 2026 Kentucky Oaks, and on Oaks day they caught up again with the filly and trainer Ben Colebrook, participated in the walkover, and watched the race. It was an experience they’ll never forget and one that brought back fond memories of their father and grandfather.
“Even if we don’t have him here right now, I believe he sees us,” London says.
