‘As Good as We Can Be’: Young Trainer Will Walden on Path to Success with Bless the Broken

04.30.2025

Trainer Will Walden is preparing for his first start in the Longines Kentucky Oaks with a feeling of accomplishment and gratitude. Walden grew up around horse racing as the son of WinStar Farm racing manager and former trainer Elliott Walden but fell into addition during college. After 12 years of struggle, he enrolled in the Stable Recovery program in Lexington that connects people with horses and provides them a supportive environment to help them achieve sobriety.

Now Walden is building his own successful career with horses such as 3-year-old filly and Oaks contender Bless the Broken. “We want to use the past to help other people get out of the hole they’re in, but as far as racing is concerned, we want to be as good as we can be.”
