The filly Thorpedo Anna dominated fellow females in five stakes races and nearly “beat the boys” in the Travers Stakes, losing only to Fierceness, who carried his speed to memorable wins in Florida and New York. Sierra Leone nearly won the Kentucky Derby, answered the bell in every one of his seven starts, and put it all together in his season finale by winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
