Never had two horses finished in a dead heat for first at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships until the 2003 Turf when defending winner High Chaparral and U.S.-based Johar inched away from third-place finisher Falbrav to flash past the finish line together. Widely considered one of greatest races (if not THE greatest) in Breeders’ Cup history, the dead heat between High Chaparral and Johar is as sure to induce goosebumps today as it was in 2003 at Santa Anita, where Johar’s trainer, Richard Mandella, saddled a record four winners in eight championship races.
