Dubbed “the greatest comeback since Lazarus” by racecaller Tom Durkin, Da Hoss showed the heart of a champion by fighting back in the final strides after he was headed in deep stretch by Hawksley Hill to win the 1998 Breeders’ Cup Mile by a head. Because of a variety of physical ailments, Da Hoss had raced only once in an allowance race at Colonial Downs in the 23 months since he won the 1996 Mile for trainer Michael Dickinson.
