Breeders’ Cup Fantastic Finishes: 1996 Classic

It was expected to be a coronation of sorts for 1995 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Cigar, but it was not meant to be in the Hall of Famer’s final career start. Cigar was hung very wide throughout as the odds-on favorite and finished third behind upset winner Alphabet Soup, who paid $41.70 to win in his lone career Grade 1 victory by a nose over 1996 Preakness victor Louis Quatorze.
