One of the trickiest types of horses bet is the class dropper… like a horse going from an allowance into a claiming race, a higher to a lower level claiming race, or from maiden special weight to maiden claiming. First off, while competition will be softer… and presumably EASIER to beat… you know you’re generally going to have to settle for a short price… because you’re not the only one who’ll notice the drop in competition. But you always have to ask yourself.. why would the owner of this horse be willing to lose it in a claiming race? Are they just trying to unload a horse whose best days are behind it? … or are they being realistic about the horse’s ability, and hence dropping it into realistic level of competition. How to make those assessments… next time on The Action.
