Understanding pace is a key component for picking winners.

In simple terms, the pace in a race is how fast they go in the early stages. It is determined by the fractions set by the early leaders in the open half of any given race.

In sprints, horses must be fast over short distance, while in routes, stamina is at a premium, therefore, in most cases, the shorter the race, the faster the pace.

Some three weeks removed from the Belmont Stakes, a major star of the 3-year-old division will return to action on Saturday – but it’s not someone who appeared in any of the Triple Crown races.

Untapable will return to the races for the first time since her authoritative victory in the May 2 Kentucky Oaks, headlining the $300,000 Mother Goose Stakes at Belmont Park.

Moonshine Mullin’s rags-to-riches story became considerably more compelling on Saturday night at Churchill Downs when he won the $552,500 Stephen Foster Handicap and punched his ticket to the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Two days after his last breeze before the Belmont Stakes, California Chrome returned to the track on Monday.

The colt jogged one lap around the 1 ½-mile Belmont track and is scheduled to resume galloping tomorrow morning. Trainer Art Sherman will be in attendance for California Chrome’s gallop for the first time since his prized colt won the Preakness Stakes on May 17.

Dual classic winner California Chrome was again on the muscle in his Wednesday morning exercise. Like Tuesday, his connections raved about the colt’s energy in completing his usual two-mile gallop at Belmont Park.

California Chrome’s exercise rider, Willie Delgado, reported that there was no reason the 3-year-old Lucky Pulpit colt shouldn’t perform to his best come June 7.
