History unfolded in the muggy warmth of Henderson, Kentucky on July 1 as Gary and Mary West's homebred West Will Power won the $1 million Stephen Foster Stakes in geared down fashion in the first Grade 1 race ever hosted at Ellis Park in the track's 101 years of operation.

The Nassau Stakes is one of five graded stakes races July 1 on an action-packed card at Woodbine that also features the Grade 2, $200,000 Highlander Stakes and a pair of races that serve as local steppingstones to the King’s Plate and the Woodbine Oaks.

On Saturday, July 1, the first domestic “Win and You’re In” qualifying race for this fall’s $6 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic will be held in Kentucky.

In a hotly contested 3-year-old division, Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve runner-up Two Phil’s made his case as a horse to be reckoned with after a stylish score in the $500,000 Ohio Derby June 24 at Thistledown.

It might be Frankie Dettori’s farewell tour but he is producing some of his finest work and an 80th Royal Ascot winner came his way when Porta Fortuna obliged in the Group 3 Albany Stakes.

The filly provided trainer Donnacha O’Brien with a memorable first winner at the meeting, but it was hard not to escape Frankie fever as he entered the winner’s enclosure bellowing: “Eighty! Eighty!”
