Terry Finley of West Point Thoroughbreds and trainer John Sadler don’t shy away from jumping the right horse up several class levels.

What do you do with a champion filly who won her title for her performances on turf at age 2? Why, you run her on dirt, too, of course, and in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, the World Championships’ signature contest for fillies and mares, no less.

NBC Sports will provide extensive coverage of the 42nd Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Del Mar on Oct. 31 – Nov. 1. The season-culminating event features 14 races worth more than $34 million in purses and awards.

Bob Ehalt and Tom Pedulla became fast friends when they met on their first day at Fordham Preparatory School in the Bronx, N.Y., in 1970. Bob introduced Tom to Thoroughbred racing soon after that.

Many more years than not, the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf is a European affair. Horses flying in from the old continent have won nine of the last 10 editions of the 1 ½-mile Turf, including the last five in a row.
